Heritage & History

A Game With
Deep Roots

Bunnock (commonly known as "Bones") dates back to the early 1800s in Siberia, where Russian soldiers stationed in remote garrisons created games using horse ankle bones (knucklebones). Designating 2 guards and 10 soldiers per side, they threw other bones to knock them down.

Settlers brought the game to the Canadian prairies in the early 1900s, where it became a summer custom. In modern times, standard sets are made of identical synthetic replica bones, but the spirit of community and pinpoint accuracy remains the same.

Quick Guide

How to Play Bunnock

Bunnock is straightforward to learn, but takes massive skill and coordination to master. Here is the core objective.

01

Set up the Court

Two lines of 12 bones each are stood upright on gravel, 10 meters apart. The two outermost bones are 'Guards' (coloured red/yellow), and the 10 middle bones are 'Soldiers' (white).

02

Knock Down Guards

On your turn, you throw 8 bones sequentially from your line at the opponent's line. Crucially, you must knock down both of the opponent's Guards before you are allowed to hit any Soldiers!

03

Clear the Court

After both Guards are down, clear all remaining Soldiers. The first team to knock down all opponent bones wins the game (or triggers a rebuttal phase if they went first).
